Acute appendicitis

The appendix's lumen blocks, mucus and bacteria build up behind it, and the inflamed wall can die and perforate within a day or two.

Installation

This adds acute-appendicitis.tsx, the disease's data and component, to your components directory. It is built on the disease viewer and reuses the models of the appendix, which install with it.

Every structure is a finding: affected structures are amber and spared ones muted. Select one, in 3D or in the panel, to read what the disease does there.

Course

Set stage or defaultStage to one of these. Each stage changes which structures are affected and the investigations to expect.

Early "early"
The first 12 hours. Central abdominal pain, loss of appetite and nausea; the examination can still be unremarkable.
Affects 1 structure of the appendix.
Suppurative "suppurative"
Bacteria invade the wall. The pain moves to the right iliac fossa as the inflamed appendix touches the parietal peritoneum.
Affects 2 structures of the appendix.
Perforated "perforated"
Usually after 48 hours. The dead wall gives way; pus forms an abscess or spreads as peritonitis. Pain may ease briefly, then the patient becomes unwell.
Affects 4 structures of the appendix.

Without Panel

Hide the panel to place the model in your own layout, and choose the scale and stage with props.
