Breast cancer

The commonest cancer in women. Most arise in the cells lining the terminal ducts and lobules; caught early by screening or a lump, most are cured.

ICD-10 C50.4On the breast3 stages

Installation

bunx shadcn@4.22.1 add @organui/breast-cancer

This adds breast-cancer.tsx, the disease's data and component, to your components directory. It is built on the disease viewer and reuses the models of the breast, which install with it.

Usage

import { BreastCancer } from "@/components/breast-cancer"

export function BreastCancerDemo() {
  return <BreastCancer />
}

Every structure is a finding: affected structures are amber and spared ones muted. Select one, in 3D or in the panel, to read what the disease does there.

Course

Set stage or defaultStage to one of these. Each stage changes which structures are affected and the investigations to expect; the timeline under the model shows them in order, with the events along the way.

  1. In situ "in-situ" · Screen-detected

    Ductal carcinoma in situ: microcalcifications on a screening mammogram, with no lump. Coded D05.1 rather than C50. It is removed with clear margins; radiotherapy after breast-conserving surgery halves the chance of it returning. Untreated, some becomes invasive.

    • Screening: In the UK, a mammogram every three years from 50 up to the 71st birthday; it finds cancers too small to feel, and also some that would never have caused harm.
    • Triple assessment: Examination, imaging and a needle biopsy, at one visit; a vacuum biopsy samples the calcifications.
    • Excision: Wide local excision with clear margins, then radiotherapy; a mastectomy if the DCIS is widespread.

    Affects 1 structure of the breasts.

  2. Early invasive "early" · Months to years

    Invasive breast cancer of no special type (ductal): a hard, painless lump under 5 cm with no spread beyond the armpit. Surgery and the treatments matched to its receptors cure most.

    • Surgery: Wide local excision with radiotherapy, or mastectomy, with a sentinel node biopsy from the armpit to stage it.
    • Endocrine therapy (5–10 years): For hormone receptor-positive cancer: tamoxifen before the menopause, or an aromatase inhibitor after; this cuts the risk of dying from breast cancer by about a third. Chemotherapy is added when the risk is high, guided by a gene test such as Oncotype DX.

    Affects 2 structures of the breasts.

  3. Locally advanced "locally-advanced" · Untreated, months

    A tumour over 5 cm with nodes, one that has invaded the chest wall or skin (ulceration, nodules, peau d'orange), or fixed or matted nodes in the armpit. Treatment starts with chemotherapy or hormone therapy to shrink it, then surgery and radiotherapy.

    • Neoadjuvant therapy: Chemotherapy before surgery, with trastuzumab and pertuzumab for HER2-positive disease or pembrolizumab for triple-negative, to shrink the tumour and the nodes; how well it responds guides what follows.

    Affects 5 structures of the breasts.

Without Panel

Hide the panel to place the model in your own layout, and choose the scale and stage with props.

Controlled

Drive the stage, scale and selection from your own state, such as a patient's timeline.
