Installation

bunx shadcn@4.22.1 add @organui/acute-otitis-media

This adds acute-otitis-media.tsx, the disease's data and component, to your components directory. It is built on the disease viewer and reuses the models of the ear, which install with it.

Usage

import { AcuteOtitisMedia } from "@/components/acute-otitis-media"

export function AcuteOtitisMediaDemo() {
  return <AcuteOtitisMedia />
}

Every structure is a finding: affected structures are amber and spared ones muted. Select one, in 3D or in the panel, to read what the disease does there.

Course

Set stage or defaultStage to one of these. Each stage changes which structures are affected and the investigations to expect; the timeline under the model shows them in order, with the events along the way.

  1. Acute "acute" · Days 1–3

    Ear pain and fever a few days into a cold; a toddler pulls at the ear, cries and sleeps badly. Pain relief is the main treatment, and most get better within three days.

    • Pain relief: Paracetamol or ibuprofen, or anaesthetic ear drops if the drum is intact, and a review if the child is not better in three days or is getting worse.
    • Antibiotics when needed: Amoxicillin for five to seven days for a child who is systemically unwell, under two with both ears infected, or with discharge; otherwise often a prescription to collect only if it is no better in a few days.

    Affects 2 structures of the ear.

  2. Glue ear "glue-ear" · Weeks after

    The infection settles, but fluid often stays behind the drum for weeks (otitis media with effusion). There is no pain, only muffled hearing. In most children it clears within three months on its own.

    • Watchful waiting (3 months): A hearing test, then a recheck after three months. Antibiotics and decongestants do not help.
    • Grommets: Small tubes through the drum let air in, for glue ear in both ears lasting over three months with hearing loss; hearing aids are the alternative.

    Affects 2 structures of the ear.

  3. Or Perforated "perforated" · Days 1–3

    The pressure bursts the eardrum: the pain eases suddenly and pus runs from the ear. Most small tears heal within a few weeks.

    • Keep it dry: Antibiotics, as discharge is a reason for them, and no swimming until the drum has healed. A tear still open after six weeks needs an ear, nose and throat review.

    Affects 2 structures of the ear.
