A permanent widening of the abdominal aorta to 3 cm or more, most often below the kidneys, in older men who smoke. It grows silently, often slowly, and is repaired once the risk of rupture is high.
Installation
bunx shadcn@4.22.1 add @organui/abdominal-aortic-aneurysmThis adds abdominal-aortic-aneurysm.tsx, the disease's data and component, to your components directory. It is built on the disease viewer and reuses the models of the vessels, which install with it.
Usage
import { AbdominalAorticAneurysm } from "@/components/abdominal-aortic-aneurysm"
export function AbdominalAorticAneurysmDemo() {
return <AbdominalAorticAneurysm />
}Every structure is a finding: affected structures are amber and spared ones muted. Select one, in 3D or in the panel, to read what the disease does there.
Course
Set stage or defaultStage to one of these. Each stage changes which structures are affected and the investigations to expect; the timeline under the model shows them in order, with the events along the way.
- Small
"small"· YearsFrom 3.0 to 5.4 cm, growing a few millimetres a year. Found by screening or on a scan for something else. Watched with ultrasound, as repair carries more risk than rupture at this size; stopping smoking slows growth.
- Screening (men at 65): In the UK, a single ultrasound of the aorta for men in the year they turn 65, which halves deaths from rupture.
- Surveillance: Ultrasound every year from 3.0 to 4.4 cm and every three months from 4.5 to 5.4 cm, with help to stop smoking, a statin, blood pressure control and usually aspirin, for the heart risk that comes with it.
Affects 1 structure of the blood vessels.
- Large
"large"· Years laterAt 5.5 cm or more (5.0 cm in women) the risk of rupture outweighs the risk of repair, as it does for one over 4 cm growing more than 1 cm a year, or one causing symptoms. Repaired with a stent graft or open surgery.
- Referral (within 2 weeks): To a vascular service, which assesses fitness for surgery and plans the repair on a CT angiogram.
- Repair: Open repair replaces the aneurysm with a graft; a stent graft (EVAR) placed through the groin is easier to recover from but needs lifelong scans to check it stays sealed.
Affects 2 structures of the blood vessels.
- Or Ruptured
"ruptured"· Without repairSudden abdominal or back pain and collapse, sometimes with a pulsatile mass. About 8 in 10 die, many before reaching hospital; the rest need repair within hours. Rupture is rare below 5.5 cm.
- Emergency repair: Straight to theatre, giving only enough fluid to keep the patient conscious until the aorta is clamped or sealed. EVAR is preferred when the anatomy allows.
Affects 1 structure of the blood vessels.
Without Panel
Hide the panel to place the model in your own layout, and choose the scale and stage with props.
Controlled
Drive the stage, scale and selection from your own state, such as a patient's timeline.
